Gabriel Martins

Gabriel Martins, cello (Bloomington, IN), is a first-prize winner of the David Popper International Cello Competition, Orford Music Award, Schadt String Competition, and Sphinx Competition. Additionally, he has won prizes in the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians and the Prague Spring International Music Competition. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in Carnegie Zankel Hall, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Maison Symphonique in Montréal, Teatro Gran Rex in Buenos Aires, and Walt Disney Concert Hall. He has collaborated with Paul Biss, Miriam Fried, Ara Gregorian, Edgar Meyer, Csaba Onczay, Steven Tenenbom, and the Borromeo String Quartet, and has given recitals on the Dame Myra Hess series. From 2017–19, he was a member of the critically-acclaimed SAKURA Cello Quintet. In 2019, he was invited to tour with Miriam Fried and Musicians from Ravinia’s Steans Music Institute. He received his B.M from the USC Thornton School of Music with Ralph Kirshbaum, and is currently a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music with Laurence Lesser.
