Matthew Overbay

Matthew Overbay, percussion (Glade Spring, VA), is currently a DMA candidate at Stony Brook University where he studies with Eduardo Leandro and plays with Culper, a percussion trio founded with Joe DeMarco and Peter White. Matthew previously attended the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University where he formed many new music ensembles. His Baltimore-based mixed chamber group, Syzygy, has performed at the Nief-Norf Summer Festival while his Peabody-born percussion duo, MoRF, most recently performed at Princeton University during the So Percussion Summer Institute. Matthew also co-founded Milieu, a percussion quartet that won the distinction of being a Peabody Honors Ensemble, and which performed with Yellow Barn Music Haul in and around Baltimore. Before graduate school, Matthew attended New York University where he studied politics and percussion. He performed Xenakis’s solo music at the World Science Festival and attended the Aspen Music Festival as a full-scholarship recipient. In the spring of 2020, Matthew finished his residency at Stony Brook and accepted a Percussion Teaching Fellowship at Bard College Conservatory of Music, assisting percussion program co-directors Eric Cha-Beach and Jason Treuting. In addition to chamber coaching inside the Conservatory, Matthew also regularly performs with The Orchestra Now.
