Matthew Chen, cello (Westlake Village, CA), received his BM from the Juilliard School under the instruction of Natasha Brofsky, and currently is pursuing his MM at Juilliard. Matthew is co-principal cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra and has served as assistant principal of the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Recent highlights include a fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center, working with conductors Andris Nelsons, Herbert Blomstedt, and Stefan Asbury, as well as participation in the Winter Workshop at the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival, and the premiere performance in New York City of a new work by composer Tengku Irfan, commissioned by Matthew and his clarinet trio. He has performed with Ani Kavafian, Hye-Jin Kim, Steve Tenenbaum, and Hsin-Yun Huang. His quartet, Arte Quartet, is a member of Juilliard’s Honors Chamber Music Program, and performed the Schubert Cello Quintet with cellist Natasha Brofsky in Alice Tully Hall as well as on WQXR’s Midday Masterpieces series.
