Max Tan, violin (Shelter Island Heights, NY), has performed as a solo and chamber musician across the USA, including at Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Symphony Hall, and has appeared with the Longwood Symphony, Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, and Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra. He completed bachelor studies in Human Developmental and Regenerative Biology, and a secondary degree in Music at Harvard University, where he was awarded the David McCord Prize. He won first prize at the James Yannatos Competition and Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition, and won second prize at the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra Competition. Max founded Harvard’s River Charles Ensemble, a conductor-less chamber orchestra. He has participated in the Perlman Music Program and the Pacific Music Festival, and was named the inaugural Kramer Fellow at the White Mountains Music Festival. Max performed in Juilliard’s ChamberFest and toured with the Perlman Music Program’s residency in Tel Aviv. Max has collaborated with artists Itzhak Perlman, Roger Tapping, and Natalia Gutman, as well as members of the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and A Far Cry. He has worked under conductors such as Alan Gilbert, Gianandrea Noseda, Pablo Heras-Casado, Jun Märkl, Andris Poga, Nicholas McGegan, George Manahan, and Valery Gergiev, and is a former student of Albert Markov, Lynn Chang, and Itzhak Perlman. He is pursuing a Master’s degree with Donald Weilerstein and Catherine Cho at the Juilliard School, where he is a recipient of the Kovner Fellowship. Max performs on a Deconet violin on loan from the Juilliard Rare Instrument Collection.
