The Other Mozart is a monodrama created by Sylvia Milo telling the true, forgotten story of Maria Anna (Nannerl) Mozart, the sister of Amadeus - a prodigy, virtuoso and composer, who performed throughout Europe with her brother, to equal acclaim, but her work and her story faded away, lost to history. The play is based on facts, stories and lines pulled directly from the Mozart family's humorous and heartbreaking letters.
None of Nannerl’s music survives. Phyllis Chen and Nathan Davis took on the task of writing into this erasure, not presuming to represent her compositions but rather attempting to depict a fertile musical imagination. They used instruments and objects that would have been intimately familiar to Nannerl: clavichord, harpsichord, music boxes, clock chimes, and church bells, as well as hand fans and teacups. The score won the 2015 NY Innovative Theater Award for Outstanding Original Music, and received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Sound Design.
With over 250 performances to date, The Other Mozart had a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run at HERE Arts in NYC and in London at the St. James Theatre. The play has been presented in Austria by the Mozarteum Foundation at the Mozart Wohnhaus in Salzburg (inside the Mozarts’ apartment), in Vienna at the Mozarthaus Vienna (inside Amadeus’ Domgasse apartment); at the Pasinger Fabrik in Munich. In the US, it has appeared at music festivals including Mainly Mozart San Diego, Mozaic Festival, Chamber Music Northwest, Piccolo Spoleto, and tours extensively at theaters and universities.
"Strikingly beautiful"—The New York Times
"With an emotional precision that captures and rewards attention throughout, Sylvia Milo rescues Nannerl’s genius"—The Los Angeles Times
"This is a gem of a show… [Milo’s] face gleams with passion for the story of Nannerl, whom she becomes – clever, witty, frustrated, sometimes hysterical.”—The Stage, London
