Graham Cohen, viola (South Orange, NJ), is currently pursuing a B.M. at the Juilliard School. He was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, and began composing and studying violin at an early age. In 2010, Graham and his family moved to New Jersey when he was accepted to the Juilliard School's Pre-College Division as a composition major, studying with Ira Taxin. Graham also pursued a viola minor under the tutelage of Kenji Bunch. He has been studying with Toby Appel since 2013. While in high school, Graham played in the NJ Youth Symphony, the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra, the Juilliard Pre-College Orchestras, and the MusicaNova Orchestra, and performed chamber music with the NJ Youth Symphony and the Juilliard Pre-College Division. He is now a member of the orchestra, the Lab Orchestra, the AXIOM new music ensemble, and the chamber music program at Juilliard. Additionally, Graham is the viola coach for the Juilliard Pre-College String Ensemble and the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra. In the 2018-19 season, he performed Jeff Manookian's “Improvisations on Armenian Folk Songs” with the NJ Intergenerational Orchestra and Edmund Rubbra's Viola Concerto with the MusicaNova Orchestra. In addition to performing, Graham continues to compose. His most recent commission, Introduction and Toccata, was recorded by The Lotus Saxophone Trio and is featured on its first album. Graham has won the Morton Gould Award for Young Composers multiple times and was the Charlotte Bergen Award scholarship recipient in 2009.
